Installation:
------------
Please see the Adobe Illustrator 3.2 Addendum for step-by-step installation instructions.
• Before you install Adobe Illustrator 3.2, remove any old versions of the Adobe Illustrator Preferences file. Drag the Preferences file to the trash before you begin the installation process.
• Adobe Illustrator 3.2 completely replaces earlier versions of the Adobe Illustrator program. Be sure to drag the old version into the trash.
• If you install Adobe Illustrator 3.2 more than once on the same hard disk, you could inadvertently lose any files you have placed in the Adobe Illustrator folder. The Installer completely replaces the contents of the “Adobe Illustrator 3.2” folder. To avoid losing files, change the name of your existing folder to something other than “Adobe Illustrator 3.2.” After installation is complete, drag the files you want to keep into the new folder, and drag the old program files to the trash.
ATM 2.0.3:
----------
Please see the Adobe Illustrator 3.2 Addendum for step-by-step installation instructions.
• Be sure to install Adobe Type Manager version 2.0.3 and the Helvetica bitmap and outline fonts before running Adobe Illustrator.
• With System 7 software, Adobe Type Manager 2.0.3 allows you to keep outline fonts in the Extensions folder.
TrueType and PostScript® fonts:
-------------------------------
• You can not use the Create Outlines feature of Adobe Illustrator with a TrueType font.
• Although you can use both PostScript and TrueType fonts in the same document, you can not use the SAME font in both TrueType and PostScript formats. If you have a font in both the TrueType and PostScript format, we recommend that you remove the TrueType font before you install the PostScript font.
• Do not stroke text with a pattern; it will not print on the printers that are currently available.
Text:
----
• Pressing the Tab key inserts a space in both point type and path type and forces the type that follows to advance horizontally. In area type, if the text object is wrapped around a graphic object, the type will appear on the other side of the graphic object, not necessarily on the next line below the current line. Pressing Return forces the type that follows to advance to the next baseline below the current line. For more information on this subject, see “Creating Columns of Text” in your “Beyond the Basics” book.
• You can use kerning to adjust the text margins by moving the edge of the type slightly to the left or right.
• If the blinking cursor doesn’t follow the characters while you are editing characters in the Courier typeface, and you are using Font Porter, check to see if Courier is present in two locations: in your system file and in a Font/DA Mover document in your system folder. If it is present in both places, remove Courier from your system file and restart your Macintosh.
• If special symbol characters such as the “infinity” symbol (Option-5) do not display correctly on the screen, make sure that you have installed the Symbol bitmap font.
• In the Adobe Illustrator User Guide, at the top of page 234, the Shortcuts suggestion SHOULD say: “To make the leading value the same as the size value, click the word Leading in the Type Style dialog box. To decrease the leading...”
Printing:
-------
• If your file takes an inordinately long time to print or does not print at all, try selecting all objects and setting the Flatness value in the Paint Style dialog box to a value greater than 1. Higher values print faster, but can cause curves to look less smooth. Doubling or quadrupling the Flatness value is a good start. Setting the Flatness to a value greater than 10 will most likely cause curves that are not visually smooth.
• To preview the effect of the flatness setting on your output device, you must set the output resolution in the Preferences dialog box. Select the “Split long paths on Save/Print” option to activate the “Output resolution” option. The screen image will approximate the results of your output device.
• Do not select the “Unlimited downloadable fonts in a document” option in the Page Setup dialog box; selecting this option prevents Adobe Illustrator from downloading fonts to the printer.
General notes:
--------------
• The Radius Pivot™ Display Systems may cause unexpected results. Do not pivot the Radius Pivot Display while Adobe Illustrator is running, otherwise a system error may occur.
• To close a window press Command-Option-w.
• To copy objects as you move them with the cursor keys, press Command-Option-Shift while you use the cursor keys.
• If you start your computer using one monitor, then drag your work area to a larger monitor, you will not be able to resize the work area. To use the entire display area of a larger monitor, you must make that monitor your startup monitor.
• To open a file and change, add, or remove its template, use the Option key when pressing Command-O or selecting Open from the file menu. Be sure to press the Option key before dragging the mouse down the menu bar.
• If you are using the System 7 publish and subscribe option, be aware that what will be published is the area within the bounding box rather than just selected objects. Moving or adding artwork inside the publisher rectangle adds that artwork to the publisher.
• If you are having difficulties with crashing or Out of Memory warnings, they may be cured by upgrading your system software to version 6.0.5 or higher. You should also try dragging the Preferences file to the trash so the program will create a new Preferences file.
• The Adobe Illustrator EPSF Riders file contains Read Me notes that explain how to use the file.
• Be sure to save files that are to be imported into other applications (or placed into other Adobe Illustrator files) by selecting one of the following Preview options in the Save dialog box: “None (Include EPSF Header),” “Black & White Macintosh®,” “Color Macintosh,” or “IBM® PC.” Do not save with “None (Omit EPSF Header)” when exporting to other applications (or for placing into other Adobe Illustrator files).
• The Toyo Colorfinder in the custom color picker is for use with Toyo ink printers only. With other printers, these colors will generate unpredictable results.
Saving in earlier Adobe Illustrator formats:
---------------------------------------
• In general, saving files in either Adobe Illustrator 88 or Adobe Illustrator 1.1 format implies a loss of certain features that will not be regained when the file is read again by Adobe Illustrator 3.2.
• Adobe Illustrator 3.2 always puts text objects into groups when writing files in Adobe Illustrator 88 compatible format. Therefore you must first ungroup text objects in Adobe Illustrator 88 before you can edit them.
Features that are not preserved by Adobe Illustrator 88 or 1.1 formats:
• Text Objects are broken up into as many Adobe Illustrator 1.1 or 88 style text objects as are necessary to preserve the visual fidelity of the text. All Adobe Illustrator 1.1 or 88 text objects generated from the same Adobe Illustrator 3.2 text object are grouped together.
• Guides are converted to normal path objects.
• Compound Paths (including type converted to outlines) are converted to grouped paths (holes are not maintained).
• Graphs are converted to normal artwork (the graph data and the graph styles are not preserved for regraphing).
• The definitions of Graph Designs are not preserved. If they have been used in a graph, they are converted to normal artwork within that graph.
Features that are not preserved by Adobe Illustrator 1.1 format:
• Custom colors are converted to process colors.
• Patterns are converted to a 50% gray tint.
• Masking and Locking attributes are not preserved.
Graph Designs:
------------
• Graph marker designs within graphs may show slightly different stroke widths when graphs originally created in Adobe Illustrator 3.0 or 3.0.1 are recreated in Adobe Illustrator 3.2 with new styles, designs, or data.
• When editing a design within a graph, you should select the entire design. Any edits made to parts of a design will be lost if the graph is recreated with a new style, graph design, or data.
• The height of the backmost rectangle in the design is what is used to scale the design; even if the design is rotated, the original height is used to scale the design. Remember that the taller the backmost rectangle is (relative to the rest of the design), the smaller the design will appear in the legend. The design is always scaled uniformly to avoid distortion, and it is scaled so that the height matches the height (or width if rotated) of the original legend box.
• You can adjust the width of repeating graph designs using the Column Width field in the Graph Style dialog box. This scales the design horizontally while the height remains constant.
• To create efficient graph designs, use the fewest number of objects possible. It often helps to ungroup rectangles and circles and to remove their center points before defining the design.
• To avoid accidentally redefining a graph design or pattern, make sure that you don’t have a graph design or pattern prototype selected when you bring up the Define Graph Design dialog box or Patterns dialog box, respectively.
Graph Data Window:
-----------------
• When importing files, the Adobe Illustrator program does not erase the current table before importing data; therefore, if you are about to import a file that does not have as many columns or rows as the data that already exists in the table, and you don’t want the extra data to appear, you must delete the old data manually.
Graph Customization:
------------------
• Any editing of a text object in the graph itself will not be remembered the next time the graph is recreated with a new style, graph design, or data. Make all corrections to the text in the Graph Data window, and click OK.
• Not all customizations of graphs are remembered when a graph is recreated. A simple way to see if a customization will be remembered when a graph is recreated is to select the graph, open the Graph Style dialog box, and click OK. This will recreate the graph even if nothing has been changed, and will show what is remembered and what is not.
• If you do not want certain numbers in the axis to appear, set the Paint style of those numbers to no fill and no stroke rather than deleting the numbers. Deleted numbers will reappear (and print) the next time the graph is recreated; however, numbers set to no stroke and no fill will appear on the screen (in Artwork mode only) but will not print.
• Type style changes made to text objects in a graph will be remembered when the graph is recreated only if you select the text object with the direct-selection tool, not with the type tool’s I-beam pointer.
• Do not add objects to a graph object group; added objects will disappear when the graph is recreated. The most common way this happens is Option-dragging columns to create a shadow effect. Use the Shadow check box in the Graph Style dialog box rather than creating a shadow manually.
• A graph shadow can be customized as a group; however, customization of individual parts of that group will be lost when the graph is recreated.
• Adobe Separator 3.0.4 completely replaces earlier versions of Adobe Separator. Be sure to throw away the old version of the program, as well as the old Separator Prefs file in your System folder.
• Please see the addendum for information on changes made to how the program overprints 100% black.
• If you wish to specify a white ink, then you must use a custom color. When you specify an object with white ink, this object will never overprint (i.e. always knockout), even if you check the Overprint option.
• If you want to print multiple custom colors on a single plate, select Separations and check the custom colors you want to print. While holding down the Option key, choose Print Selected Separations from the File menu. A dialog box will appear, asking you whether or not you want 100% black to overprint; click Yes or No. A second dialog box will appear, asking whether you want to print multiple colors on a single plate; click Yes.
• If you are having difficulties running Separator 3.0.4, they may be cured by upgrading your system software to version 6.0.5 or higher.
• PostScript® Printer Description (PPD) Files, needed by Adobe Separator, are included in the Gallery Disk.
• The PPD folder contains a Read Me file and a Filename.MAP file. The Filename.MAP file specifies which PPD files should be used with various printers.
• Marks that are partially off the edge of the page may cause RangeCheck errors.
• Any registration marks inside the bounding box may be covered by the image. The image is printed on top of the marks.
• Displayed colors don’t exactly match the colors displayed by Adobe Illustrator because the preview contains dithered colors that change when the image is scaled down.
• If a custom color is converted to a process color, all process colors are enabled even if the custom color does not contain all the process colors.
• When several documents of different page sizes are separated in succession, "Default Setting" needs to be selected when each document is brought in, otherwise Adobe Separator will use the settings of the previous document.
• When a document contains PANTONE colors, the PANTONE colors appear in the custom color list of the Separations dialog. To simulate a PANTONE color using process colors, you must select the name (instead of the checkbox) so that the name becomes grayed out.
